Steep

Rural South Downs village linked to poet Edward Thomas, with wooded hangers and country walks.

Steep is a rural village in the South Downs National Park, about two miles north of Petersfield. It is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with deep Hampshire countryside character — wooded hangers, sunken lanes, and panoramic views from Shoulder of Mutton Hill. The village was famously associated with the poet Edward Thomas, who lived here before his death in the First World War.

Steep is primarily residential with a primary school, village hall, and the Harrow Inn — one of the oldest continuously licensed pubs in Hampshire. The village is a starting point for many South Downs walking routes.
