Booking a Gas or LPG Boiler Service in Petersfield: Checks, Questions and Paperwork

Whether your boiler runs on mains gas or LPG from a tank, the booking questions are similar but the engineer's registration needs to match. Here is how to book a boiler service around Petersfield, and what landlords must do every year.

Book a gas or LPG boiler service with an engineer on the Gas Safe Register whose card covers your appliance and fuel. Ask what the service includes, whether faults will be quoted before work, and what written record you will receive. Landlords must have a registered engineer carry out a gas safety check every year and give tenants a copy of the record.

Gas or LPG: say which you have

Some homes around Petersfield use mains gas and others use LPG from a tank or bottles. Both are gas work, but the engineer's qualifications are listed by fuel and appliance. Tell the provider which you have when you book.

Check the engineer properly

  • Anyone working on a gas or LPG boiler must be on the Gas Safe Register.
  • Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card. The back of the card lists the types of work they are qualified for, so check it covers your appliance and, for LPG, that fuel.
  • You can also check the engineer's details on the register's website before the visit.

Questions to ask when booking

  • Do you service my make of boiler, on my fuel?
  • What does your service include, and what would be extra?
  • If you find a fault, will you quote before doing any repair?
  • Will I receive a written record of the service?
  • Do you cover my address, and is there a travel charge?
  • Does my boiler guarantee require a service at a set interval? Check the manual too.

Have this ready

  • Boiler make and model from the data label.
  • The last service record and the manual, if you have them.
  • Notes of anything odd: noises, pressure changes, lockouts or error codes.
  • Clear access to the boiler and, for LPG, to the tank or bottles.

If you are a landlord

GOV.UK sets out that landlords must have gas equipment they supply installed and maintained by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register, arrange an annual gas safety check on each appliance and flue, and give tenants a copy of the record before they move in or within 28 days of the check. A boiler service and a gas safety check can be different things, so ask the engineer which you are booking, or whether they will do both.

After the visit

Keep the written record with the manual so the next engineer can see the history. If something was flagged, ask for the quote in writing. If the boiler stops working before the next service, use our boiler breakdown guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does an LPG boiler need a Gas Safe engineer?
Yes. LPG is gas work, so the engineer must be on the Gas Safe Register. Check that the back of their ID card covers LPG and your type of appliance.
Is a boiler service the same as a landlord gas safety check?
Not always. A service maintains the boiler; a gas safety check is the annual legal check landlords must arrange on each gas appliance and flue. Ask the engineer which you are booking.
How do I check a gas engineer is registered?
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check the categories on the back, then look them up on the Gas Safe Register website.
What should I receive after a gas boiler service?
A written record of what was checked and found, plus a quote in writing for anything that needs repair. Keep it with the boiler manual.
