Garden waste: a paid fortnightly service

Garden waste is not part of the standard bin collection in Petersfield. East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) runs it as an optional paid subscription, described on its garden waste page. The service provides 25 fortnightly collections a year. It does not run over the Christmas period, and crews collect real Christmas trees on the first garden waste collection of the new year.

On 5 October 2026 the council's published charges were £130.00 for the annual garden waste bin subscription and £86.00 for a 240-litre brown wheeled bin, including delivery, if you do not already have one. Subscriptions are non-refundable once bought.

The council says it currently has limited capacity, so you can only sign up online if there is space on the rounds in your area, and it cannot take new customers on its hard-to-reach rounds (calendars beginning with H). Sack subscriptions are listed for existing customers only.

What can go in the brown bin

Accepted: grass cuttings, hedge cuttings, weeds, leaves, prunings, small branches and real Christmas trees.

Not accepted: soil, concrete and rubble, vegetable peelings and food scraps, coal and ash, animal waste, and general household or commercial waste.

Renewals and missed garden waste collections

Renewals fall at the end of a calendar month. EHDC emails or writes to you in the month your renewal is due, and suggests checking your junk folder. If your brown bin is missed, leave it out and report it through MyEHDC by 4pm on the next working day, the same rule as for other bins.

If you cannot join the service, garden waste can be taken to a household waste recycling centre, which needs to be booked. See our Petersfield recycling centre guide.

Bulky waste: how the collection works

For large items that cannot go in a bin, EHDC offers a bulky waste collection service. It is for householders living in the district only, not for trade or commercial waste. You book online from that page, the council gives you a collection day, and the item must be at the edge of your property by 7am, visible from the road and not blocking the highway.

Bulky waste prices

The charges below were published on the council's page on 5 October 2026 and include VAT. The price depends on the size of the item.

Medium item, £28.00. Examples given by the council include a microwave, vacuum cleaner, bicycle, television, pram or ironing board.

Large item, £41.00. Examples include an under-counter washing machine, tumble drier, dishwasher, fridge or freezer, an armchair, a two-seater sofa or a single bed frame.

Extra large item, £58.00. Examples include a three-seater sofa, chest of drawers, dining table, double bed frame, desk or a king-size mattress.

Bulky item, £97.00. Examples include a wardrobe without glass or mirrors, a corner sofa, a three-piece suite, a sideboard or a king-size bed frame.

A special collection by volume (a full load) is listed at £291.00. The council also lists four bulky items in any rolling 12 months free of charge for residents who qualify for its benefit discount.

What the council will not collect

EHDC lists glass and furniture with glass panels, trade waste, waste from refurbishments such as fitted kitchens and bathroom suites, batteries and paint, building materials, paving slabs, rubble, soil and trees, garage doors and gym equipment. Crews also cannot take large American-style fridge freezers. Garden waste is not taken as bulky waste.

Upholstered furniture has to be collected separately from other bulky waste, so read the council's upholstered furniture guidance before booking a sofa or armchair.

Cheaper options to try first

If the item is still usable, selling or donating it costs nothing. Small quantities of rubble and soil, and most other household items, can be taken to the Hampshire County Council recycling centre in Petersfield by appointment. If you pay a private firm to take waste away, EHDC's fly-tipping page advises checking they are a registered waste carrier, because you can be given a £400 fixed penalty if your waste is later fly-tipped.
