Replacing a Boiler Around Petersfield: Gas, Oil, LPG or Heat Pump?
A new boiler is a big decision, and around Petersfield the choice often depends on whether your home has mains gas. Here is how to compare like-for-like replacement with switching fuel, and what to get from every quote.
Get at least two written quotes that name the boiler or heat pump model, what is removed and replaced, any changes to pipes, radiators or cylinder, the guarantee, and who registers the work. If your home is on oil or LPG, ask whether a heat pump would suit it, because a government grant can apply when replacing fossil fuel heating.
When replacement comes up
Replacement is usually raised after repeated breakdowns, when parts become hard to get, or when you are renovating. Ask the engineer who raised it to explain why in writing, and get a second opinion before committing.
The main options
- Like-for-like: replacing a gas, oil or LPG boiler with a new one on the same fuel. Usually the least disruption to pipework and the tank.
- Changing fuel: for example moving from oil to LPG, or connecting to mains gas if it is available at your property. Ask about tank removal, new pipework and any gas connection.
- A heat pump: an air source heat pump replaces the boiler as the heat source. It can mean changes to radiators, a hot water cylinder and outdoor space for the unit. See our heat pump installation and grant guide.
A GOV.UK grant can help with the cost of replacing fossil fuel heating, including oil, gas, LPG or electric, with a heat pump. It does not apply to a new boiler.
Questions to ask each installer
- Which model are you quoting, and why that one for my home?
- What is removed, and what new parts are included: flue, controls, cylinder, radiators?
- Will my hot water arrangement change, for example from a cylinder to a combi?
- What guarantee comes with it, and what servicing does that guarantee require?
- Who registers the installation, and what certificate will I get?
- How long will I be without heating or hot water? Ask for this in writing.
Registration to check
Gas and LPG boilers must be fitted by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. For oil, ask which competent person scheme covers the work; OFTEC is the oil heating trade body. For heat pumps, the grant requires an MCS certified installer.
Compare quotes on the same basis
Line the quotes up by model, scope, guarantee and paperwork, not just the total. A cheaper quote that leaves out the cylinder, controls or flue is not comparable. Our heating engineer checklist has more questions, and if the old boiler has failed in the meantime, see what to do in a breakdown.
