Air Source Heat Pumps in Petersfield: The Grant, Oil and LPG Homes, and What to Ask an Installer

If you are thinking of replacing an oil, LPG or gas boiler with an air source heat pump, the government grant and the installer's certification matter as much as the unit. This guide sets out the current grant rules, as published on GOV.UK, and the questions to ask installers covering Petersfield.

Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, homeowners in England replacing fossil fuel heating can get £7,500 towards an air source heat pump. Until March 2027 there is an extra £1,500 if the home is heated by oil or LPG and has no mains gas connection. The installer must be MCS certified and applies for the grant on your behalf; the amount comes off your quote.

The grant, in plain terms

Figures below are from GOV.UK, checked on 17 October 2026. Check the page again before you sign anything, because schemes change.

  • £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (air-to-water).
  • An extra £1,500, until March 2027, if your home is heated by oil or LPG and has no mains gas connection.
  • £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump.
  • One grant per property. Hybrid systems, such as a gas boiler with a heat pump, are not eligible.

If your home runs on oil or LPG and has no mains gas connection, ask installers specifically about the extra amount.

Who is eligible

GOV.UK says you must own the property (including a second home or one you rent out) and be replacing fossil fuel heating such as oil, gas, LPG or electric. Most new builds and social housing are not eligible, nor is a property that has already had government funding for a heat pump. The installer must commission the heat pump within 120 days of applying.

How the grant is claimed

You do not apply yourself. You get quotes from MCS certified installers, agree one, and the installer applies on the Ofgem website. The grant is taken off what you pay and shown on the quote and invoice. Ofgem may contact you to confirm the installer is acting for you.

Questions to ask installers

  • Are you MCS certified for heat pumps, and can I check it?
  • Is my home suitable, and what survey will you do to size the system?
  • Will radiators, pipework or the hot water cylinder need changing?
  • Where would the outdoor unit go, and does it need planning permission at my address?
  • Does the quote show the grant deducted, and include the extra amount if I am on oil or LPG without mains gas?
  • What servicing does the guarantee require, and who will do it?
